Holiday dinners for me and my family always include macaroni and cheese. If there are too many starches on the menu, something else will be eliminated so we can keep the mac and cheese. My family has a basic recipe that has been tweaked a little here and there but the results are always the same – lip smacking macaroni and cheese.
When my youngest daughter was nine years old, she invited a friend to dinner. Wanting to be a good host I asked about the little girl’s favorite food. Much to my surprise, it was macaroni and cheese. So I set out to bake my best macaroni casserole. I learned a great lesson that day – what’s considered good is subject to individual taste.
Long story short – the child did not like my macaroni and cheese. I asked the little girl what was wrong with it and she said, “My mom doesn’t make it like this.” So I asked, “How does she make it?” “Well,” the little girl said, “She opens the box and pours the cheese in with the macaroni.” I have no idea what she said after that because suddenly I realized that my precious family recipe was competing with Kraft.
That was 22 years ago and we still laugh about it at family dinners.

That’s so funny. My 9-year-old son has asked for macaroni & cheese as his birthday cake for the last two years. He turns his nose up at that little blue box.
I like the idea of sour cream in mac n’ cheese. I’ll have to give your version a try!
Mac and cheese is great because you can mix it up and tweak the recipe by trying different things. I like your recipe it looks easy and yummy!
